2012 Under Manhattan

Where do you go when you have been everywhere? To the sewage under Manhattan.

During the Christmas season, Erling Kagge goes to New York to explore the city – under ground. Together with Steve Duncan he walks through sewers, underground subways and water tunnels, from the Bronx via Manhattan with the Atlantic Ocean as their final destination. The reader is taken on a leisurely and essayistic journey never previously carried out, which according to the New York Times “revealed an entirely new way of understanding the city”. The expedition is also an inner journey, a reflection on the meaning of life and where to find happiness.
